Homemade Wind Turbine

Finding ways to harness renewable sources of energy should be the focus of every household nowadays. With the rising prices of gasoline in the world market, you can be sure that charges for electricity will also go up as power plants use coal and fossil fuels to produce power for our needs. If people are able to harness renewable and natural sources of energy, however, they can help themselves minimize their expenses as well as ensure a secondary supply of power just in case the power stations shut down accidentally.

Now how can one get power from renewable sources? What are sources are these?

Sources of Renewable Power

The two most common sources of renewable power are the Sun and the wind. The kinetic energy of flowing water can also be used to produce electricity, but one would need a big machine in order to harvest that resource. Thus, the Sun and the wind are more practical for the home. Solar power can be harnessed by creating and installing solar panels while using the wind to produce wind would need a homemade wind turbine to do so. Of the two, the wind is even more practical because the apparatus needed is cheaper to produce. In other words, you can assemble a wind turbine system that can produce 1000 watts at a cost lower than what you would incur to build a solar panel assembly that produces the same power.

Creating Your Own Homemade Wind Turbine

In order to begin harnessing the unlimited power that the wind can give you, you need to first get your hands on a wind turbine. You can buy them, but it is better to build your own homemade wind turbine because it is cheaper. You can choose your own materials, and you don’t have to pay for labor hence you can keep the costs down to manageable levels.

To start making your Home Made Wind Turbine, you would need to know the different parts of the project. Now, these are the parts that make up the wind turbine assembly:

  • Motor

The motor will produce the electrical energy that is harnessed from the spinning of the turbine blades. For a homemade wind turbine to work, use a motor that can produce enough power at low RPMs since you won’t be working with winds of high speed all the time.

  • Turbine blades

The turbine blades are responsible for harnessing kinetic energy that is then converted to electrical energy. There are a wide variety of materials available for making turbine blades and these include PVC pipes and wood, among others.

  • Tower assembly

The tower assembly is needed to hold the turbine aloft and expose it to the winds. The construction and the materials of the tower assembly are all entirely up to you. As turbine towers look cool from a distance, design one that is innovative as well.

  • Controller unit

The controller unit will be responsible for managing the flow of power from the wind turbine and to your recipients. This would require a schematic to design, all of which are readily available in the Internet if you don’t know any electric circuit designing.
